Investing in the Future: Reflecting on Farmers of Salem's 2026 Summer Internship Program
At Farmers of Salem, we believe the future of the insurance industry begins by investing in the next generation of professionals. Each year, our 10-week Summer Internship Program provides students with meaningful, hands-on experience while introducing them to the many career opportunities available within the property and casualty insurance industry.
This summer, we were pleased to welcome two Insurance Operations Interns, Luke Vinson and Farrah Reader, both students in Temple University's nationally recognized Risk Management & Insurance (RMI) program. Since joining Farmers of Salem in May, Luke and Farrah have rotated through multiple departments, worked on meaningful projects, collaborated with experienced professionals, and gained firsthand insight into how our teams work together to serve policyholders and support the company's operations.
Discovering a Career in Risk Management
Luke Vinson, who graduated from Cherokee High School in Marlton, New Jersey, in 2024 and expects to graduate from Temple University in December 2027, didn't originally plan to pursue a career in insurance.
Initially intending to major in Supply Chain Management, Luke discovered Risk Management & Insurance after taking Temple University's Introduction to Risk Management course. Learning how organizations identify, evaluate, and manage risk gave him a new perspective on business and introduced him to an industry he hadn't previously considered. Through Temple University's Gamma Iota Sigma chapter, he explored the profession further and ultimately decided to major in Risk Management & Insurance.
Reflecting on his experience at Farmers of Salem, Luke shared:
"This summer at Farmers of Salem has been an incredibly valuable learning experience. I have had the opportunity to work alongside knowledgeable professionals who have been generous with their time and willing to answer questions. Through my work, I have gained a better understanding of how different departments collaborate to serve policyholders and support the company's operations. Every project has helped me build confidence and expand my understanding of the insurance industry. This experience has strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in risk management and insurance, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Farmers of Salem team."
Luke also participated in Intern Delaware, where he attended networking and professional development events with interns from across the state. The program gave him opportunities to connect with students and professionals from a variety of industries while expanding his professional network beyond insurance.
Learning Through Hands-On Experience
Farrah Reader, who graduated from Belle Vernon Area High School in Pennsylvania in 2023 and expects to graduate from Temple University in Spring 2027, also discovered her passion for insurance after taking Temple's introductory Risk Management course.
Throughout the internship, Farrah embraced the opportunity to rotate through each department, gaining a broad understanding of the company while contributing to meaningful projects.
"My experience this summer at Farmers of Salem has been unforgettable! Everyone on the staff has been incredibly welcoming, supportive, and willing to help throughout the entire internship, making it a great environment to learn and grow. Rotating through each department has expanded my knowledge and helped me discover what I enjoy most and what I want to pursue in my future career."
She especially appreciated the trust and responsibility she and Luke were given throughout the summer.
"Luke and I have been trusted with meaningful projects and research that contribute to each department. Knowing that our work will be presented or taken into consideration has made the experience even more rewarding."
Farrah also enjoyed participating in Intern Delaware, where she connected with fellow interns from across the state while exploring Delaware's professional community.
"Meeting interns from all over has been really cool, and hearing about their experiences has been even better. I am very grateful to Farmers of Salem for giving us the opportunity to attend these events and supporting us along the way."
Building the Future of Insurance
Throughout the 10-week internship, Luke and Farrah have gained practical experience by rotating through multiple departments, applying classroom concepts to real-world situations, and learning how a mutual insurance company serves its policyholders and independent agency partners.
Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to learn have made them valuable members of the Farmers of Salem team. We are grateful for their contributions throughout the summer and proud to support Temple University's Risk Management & Insurance program by providing students with opportunities to grow professionally and explore rewarding careers in the insurance industry.
As the program concludes, we wish Luke and Farrah continued success as they complete their degrees and look forward to following their careers in the years ahead.
