Doing laundry is such a routine part of life that it can be easy to overlook the maintenance a clothes dryer needs. But lint can accumulate in the lint filter, dryer, and exhaust system over time. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), dust, fiber, and lint were the first items ignited in 27% of home dryer fires studied, making regular dryer maintenance an important part of household fire prevention.

Start with the lint filter. NFPA recommends cleaning the lint filter before each load and removing lint that collects around the dryer drum. The exhaust system deserves attention, too. A restricted or lint-filled vent can interfere with airflow, and clothes taking longer than normal to dry may be a sign that the exhaust system needs cleaning. It’s also a good idea to keep the area around the dryer clear of clothing, boxes, and other combustible materials.

Some maintenance is best left to a professional. NFPA recommends having dryers professionally installed and serviced and keeping the appliance in good working order. It also advises turning the dryer off when leaving home or going to bed. A clean lint filter, clear exhaust system, and properly maintained dryer are simple precautions that can help reduce the risk of a dryer fire and protect your home and property.
