Here is a checklist for people before they leave on a vacation. 

Going on Vacation Tips:

  1. Secure the House
    1. Lock all doors and windows
    2. Secure garage and basement entries
    3. Set timers on interior lights
    4. Inform a trusted neighbor or friend
    5. Activate security systems (if applicable)

  2. Manage Mail & Deliveries
    1. Hold mail via USPS or arrange pickup
    2. Pause or reschedule regular deliveries
    3. Notify newspaper or package services

  3. Adjust Utilities & Appliances
    1. Set thermostat to energy-saving mode
    2. Unplug non-essential electronics
    3. Program smart home settings (if available)

  4. Emergency Prevention
    1. Turn off main water
    2. Check smoke detectors and alarm system
    3. Leave emergency contact info with a neighbor/family

  5. Clean & Tidy
    1. Empty trash cans
    2. Remove perishable items from the fridge
    3. Run dishwasher
    4. Do laundry
    5. Water plants (or arrange for someone to)

  6. Pay Bills
    1. Pay Insurance Bills (a cancelled policy may not be reinstated if it lapses due to non-payment)
    2. Pay utility bills, electric, gas, internet
    3. Make installments – avoid late fees by paying any car loans, credit cards, and mortgages that may come due while you are away
